GOJI SEED & GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

Goji or Wolfberry Seed
Lycium Barbarum

Start Goji seeds indoors in late winter.  The Goji plant is a beautiful hardy, bushy vine with both purple and white very small trumpet shaped flowers on the same plant, and if left un-pruned will grow 10-12 feet long.  For good berry production the Goji must be kept pruned.  The Goji will grow in almost any type of soil, light-sandy, medium-loam, or heave-clay, but they tend to flower and fruit better in a well drained soil of moderate quality and can survive winters down to -15 degrees Fahrenheit and hot summers around 100 degrees.  They have an extensive root system and are very drought tolerant once established.  They prefer full sun to partial shade, so plant them in a sunny location.  However, they will not survive or grow in wet or soggy soil. The Goji Plant can even be grown as a potted plant when kept pruned back.

If you can provide as near as possible the same organic conditions as they have in their native home land in China & Inner Mongolia, you will reap the wonderful health benefits with which our Creator Yahweh has blessed the wonderful Goji.

PLEASE NOTE: Because the Goji is so new to us here in the USA and many other places in the world, it is not known yet if the Goji will adapt to the tropical climates of the world.

Dispel The Goji Hype: We have all been lead to believe here in America that our Gojis & Wolfberries come from Tibet in the Himalayan Mountains, which is an Advertising Hype began by the big Goji Companies & Importers.  The Truth is - the Goji needs no Hype! It is a super food and is well able to stand on it's own health attributes.  For more information on the Great Goji Hype: CLICK HERE

A New Very Fruitful Goji Girl From China!

Now Introducing
A New Super
Goji Cultivar

Grown & Culivated In Zhongning County - Ningxia China,
The Home Town Of Goji Wolfberry

Amazing Cultivar - No. 1 of Ning-qi is a cultivar newly developed by goji scientists in Ningxia after many years of experiments and selection. It is the gold medal winner of "National Scientific and Technological Achievement Prize".  In the summer of 2007, I
(Jaspn Qing) went back to Zhongning to visit my relatives and got a chance to visit a goji farm. I was very much impressed by this heavily yielding cultivar. The main features of No. 1 of Ning-qi include:

*
Higher yield
- 900 Kg dry fruit/acre for 3-year-old tree; 1620 kg dry fruit/acre for 5-year-old tree. It is not rare to see 2400 kg/acre (2.4 tons/acre dry weight) if the growing condition is ideal. Average yield is 34% higher than traditional cultivar "Da-ma-ye".

*
(The fresh-dried weight ratio for this cultivar is 4.37, so if you pursue fresh fruit, one acre can yield 8000+ kg or 8.4+ tons of fresh berries for a 3-year-old tree)

*
Larger Fruit Size - fresh fruit size ranges 1.5 cm - 2 cm, resulting in 90% super rating.

*
Ealier Yielding - It usually takes 3-5 years from planting for other goji cultivars to start production cycle, 'No. 1 of Ning-qi' can yield consierable amount of berries the first year it is planted from cuttings.

* Better Tolerance To Disease - compared with other cultivars,  "No. 1 of Ning-qi " is better tolerant to disease.

* 'No 1 of Ning-qi' is tolerant to extreme soil conditions. It grows well with soil pH >9 and high water table. So it is a ideal crop for alkaline soils not suitable for growing other crops

Note: Growing 'No1 of Ning-qi' From Seeds:

"No 1 of Ning-qi" is a hybrid cultivar, 50% of plants propagated from its seeds retain the superior yielding performance as their parent.  For example, if you grow Goji using "No 1 of Ning-qi" seeds and have 100 plants, about 50 plants (more or less) will be the same as their parent in yielding and other characteristics.  The other 50 plants would be other cultivars that were used to develop 'No 1 of Ning-qi' and they all perform better than goji seeds sold on market.

Currently some Goji growers in America sell 'Tibetan goji seeds', do not be fooled by this propaganda.  You can not keep track on cultivar information when you extract seeds from dried goji berries bought from most internet markets.  If you buy seeds from goji growers that start their goji plants from the unknown cultivar, after several generations, seeds would degrade after crossing with other cultivars or self-pollination.

Therefore, ideally, start goji plants from cuttings or young plants of a known cultivar if you want to have a better yielding Goji farm or garden.

Dreamland farm www.go-goji.com is working closely with our partners in China to introduce this super cultivar to North America.  We expect to market cuttings and plants of this super cultivar here in 2009.  We have limited supply of seeds of 'No 1 of Ning-qi' if you want to start your Goji Trees from seeds.

Please write me, Jason if you have interest to know more of this cultivar or place order for Plants and/or Cuttings.

Stevia!
The Sweeter Than Honey Herb!
A Great Complement To Sweeten The Mildly Sweet Goji Berries.

STEVIA GENERAL GROWING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ZONE 2 THROUGH 8
(Excluding South West, Texas to Florida) and including Pacific North West:

Native to mountains of Paraguay, Stevia grows best in cooler summer weather, after and before danger of frost. Authors write of the difficulty of growing Stevia, killing a number of plants before success. The critical point to raising Stevia is to keep it simple.

1. Start Stevia seed indoors. Plant outside early spring in vegetable garden after danger of frost. Methods which allow a gardener to plant earlier, such as tunnels, hotcaps, and such, are very beneficial.

2. Pinch tips out about every 3-4 weeks for first 1-2 months. This will encourage side branching which will create a bushier plant, that is not spindly. (Remember to dry and use these pinchings)

3. With the last pinching, (about 1-2 months after planting) mulch plants with bark or straw ....this will be just before summer heat, hopefully.

4. Water & fertilize as you would a vegetable garden. Low nitrogen or organic fertilizer is best.

5. Harvest entire plant as flower buds appear.

STEVIA SOUTHERN GROWING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ZONE 9 THROUGH 11
Including all south western desert states, northern Texas, and excluding northern California, and pacific northwest:

* Read the fore mentioned directions #1 through #5.
These will apply to you also. The exceptions are planting dates for Zones 9-11 and dealing with the higher light and temperatures intensities you receive during the summer months.

* The planting dates for Zones 9-11 are determined not so much by the last frost date, but rather by the day length. Because stevia requires a minimum of 12 hours (13 hours is preferred) of day light to remain green and growing and without flowers, the planting date is determined by the sunrise and sunset times available during your local weather forecast, or by contacting your local county extension agent and affiliated agriculture department. A few gardeners in southern Florida (Zone 11) reported that their fall harvested plants re-emerged the following spring in February.

* Filtered afternoon shade will be required for most of this region, but only during the hot summer months. There may be areas in Florida which receive steady afternoon thundershowers, where not even this is required. Afternoon shading can be accomplished by planting stevia on the north side of a tree or any place it will receive filtered light from 12 noon until 4:00 PM. The second option (which is best for larger crops) is to raise this crop under a shade cloth with support.

Golden Incan Berry

Plant Cultivation:
Small shrub similar to the common tomato, can be grown as an annual or perennial. Plants are usually small, only 1-3ft in height. They enjoy full sun, fairly warm (but not hot) temperatures, and protection from frost, but Incan Berry plants will withstand light frosts, unlike tomatoes. In areas where frost or freezes occur, plants are easily grown as annuals. Provide lots of water throughout the growing year, except towards fruit ripening time. Grow in most soil types and will do very well in poor soils and in pots. Plants are susceptible to many of the same diseases and pests as the tomato.

Propagation: By seed or cuttings:
The plants appear to need little or no fertilizer. Fruit production decreased significantly when fertilizer was applied. When fish emulsion or 12-5-10 (NPK) fertilizer were applied at rates approximately 45 lb. N/acre (50 kg/ha), the plants exhibited a great deal of vegetative growth but produced few flowers or fruit. Plants planted in sandy soil without any amendment or fertilizer produced 150 to 300 flowers per plant with a corresponding number of fruit. Plants typically have a sprawling habit similar in size and growth pattern to their relative, the tomato. The plants should be trellised or staked.

Fruit:
Cropping: Harvest August to October

Description:
The Golden Berry has branching stems and a bushy habit. Best grown under glass, producing succulent pineapple flavoured fruits enclosed by a papery husk, looking like Chinese lanterns. Huge crop of fruits throughout late summer/autumn.

Sowing Instructions:
Sow February to March on the surface of a good free draining, damp seed compost and cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator at a constant temperature of around 18-21C (65-70F) until germination, which takes up to 3 weeks

Growing Instructions:
Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots and grow on steadily at 15C (60F). Plant out when 20cm (8in) high, or one plant per 30cm (12in) pot. Can also be planted outdoors once risk of frost has passed. Feed regularly with a high potash tomato food once first flowers are setting. Stake plants if necessary.

Golden Mammoth Purslane

Portulaca oleracea, 300 seeds - 45 days.
This is one of the best sources of omega 3 fatty acids in the plant kingdom.

There is an enormous difference between wild and garden purslane. The garden purslane is upright in growth habit and has succulent leaves and stems twice as large as wild varieties.

Its extraordinary range of Vitamins (A, C and E) and minerals (calcium and potassium salts, phosphorus, manganese and iron), glutathione and Omega 3 fatty acids make this plant a nutritional treasure chest. A great source of anti-oxidants.

Planting: Sow seed direct in garden in the spring 1/4 or plant 1 or 2 seeds to a 1 gal. pot.

If allowed to fully mature in the garden, they will self seed.

Cultivation: Sow 1/4" deep and 1" apart as soon as soil can be worked.

Plant every 2 weeks for a constant supply.
Pull entire plant or cut greens 1-2" above ground to harvest.

Eating: It tastes great chopped in a salad, cooked in soups and stews, or just lightly steamed, buttered and salted.

Purslane is easy to grow and grows quickly. You'll be well pleased and it's delicious!
